Beaune in 2 Days
A friendly guide to discover Beaune, no matter the season. Tested restaurants, wine caves, monuments. Written by someone who lives here.
Beaune is a sleeping beauty. Well, it was before Kwame and I arrived from Norway in 2021. Now I wouldn't leave this city for anything.
Two days in Beaune? Yes, that's enough. But before you start, here's what you need to know: Beaune is not always the same.
It's a continental climate. In winter, it's cold. In summer, it's hot. In spring, the vines explode with life. In autumn, it's a blaze of colors.
Planning 2 days of cycling in January? Good on you. (Or you have Scandinavian cold blood like me.)
Here's how to do it, no matter the season.
The 5 must-sees (all seasons)
- Hospices of Beaune. Can't miss it. The architecture, the polyptych, the history. It's THE monument of Beaune. Plan 1.5 hours.
- Patriarches Caves. The largest caves in Burgundy. Paid tour, but honestly, it's worth it. You walk under 3 km of galleries. 1.5 hours too.
- The ramparts. After eating, take a stroll on the ramparts. It's free, it's beautiful, and it's the best digestif in the world.
- The belfry. If you like climbing stairs (200 steps), you get a view that's worth every step. On clear days, you can see the vineyards.
- Fallot mustard factory. Yes, it's touristy. But it's good. They do tours, explain the process, sell mustard. Perfect for an aperitif stop.
Where to stay in Beaune
Luxury (well deserved)
Le Cep. Traditional, multi-star, Beaune at its purest. And then there's Adrien, the sommelier. He's an iconoclast. He knows all the wines, all the domaines, all the family stories of the region. If you're a wine enthusiast, this is your place.
Authentic charm
Hôtel de la Foche. Run by Jean-Luc. It's a hotel « in its own juice » — a disappearing France, preserved like a living museum. You'll feel like it's 1975. It's deliberate, it's charming, and it's real.
L'Imprimerie. A beautiful guesthouse run by our friends. Marie will welcome you with warmth. It's the intimacy of a home, not a hotel room.
And then there's La Rose Pourpre. It's our place. Kwame and I love welcoming guests here. Each room has its own soul, breakfast is homemade, and in winter, you have the fireplace in the lounge. I can also organize tours for you, if you'd like.
Where to eat in Beaune (the city eats well)
Beaune is one of the cities where you eat the best in France. Period. It's not me talking, it's Michelin and all the restaurant guides. Here are my favorites.
Must-tries (reserve ahead)
Soul Kitchen. Mathieu runs it alone. A lovely restaurant with cooking that's... how to say? Impossible to find a table. If you don't reserve 2-3 weeks in advance, you won't get in. Fair warning: not for the impatient.
Le Biztrot. A former Top Chef contestant runs this place. Extraordinary cuisine. It's not the luxury of Le Cep, it's better — it's the cooking of a chef with nothing left to prove.
Excellent & accessible
Caves Madelaine. Excellent, period.
Le Bouillon. Traditional brasserie cuisine, Lyonnaise style. It's classic, it's comforting, it's delicious.
The wine shops (for aperitifs).
La P'tite Cave. Stéphanie has a fine nose, born and raised in Beaune.
She's been running her shop for decades. The best price/quality in the city.
If Stéphanie isn't there, it'll be her brother — he rolls his R's like a true Burgundian.
That's where we stop before dinner. A bottle, a cheese board, and you're ready for the evening.
The 4 itineraries (by season)
🍂 Autumn (golden leaves + wine auction)
Autumn in Beaune is magical. The leaves burst with color, and in November, there's the Hospices wine auction — can't miss it.
Day 1
- Morning: Hospices of Beaune (architecture + polyptych)
- Lunch: Caves Madelaine (restaurant in the caves)
- Afternoon: Patriarches Caves (full tour)
- Evening: Aperitif at La P'tite Cave + Soul Kitchen dinner (if booked)
Day 2
- Morning: Hospices wine auction (if you're lucky to be here)
- Lunch: Le Bouillon (Lyonnaise-style cooking)
- Afternoon: Ramparts walk + Fallot mustard factory
- Evening: Quiet dinner, back to hotel
❄️ Winter (fireplace + indoor monuments)
Winter is the time for long dinners, fireside chats, and monuments you can explore without sweating.
Day 1
- Morning: Belfry (view over snowy city, if lucky)
- Lunch: Le Biztrot (excellent, not too touristy)
- Afternoon: Hospices + Patriarches Caves
- Evening: Fireplace at La Rose Pourpre with Domaine wine
Day 2
- Morning: Fallot mustard factory (short, pleasant)
- Lunch: Le Cep (long, luxurious, wines with Adrien)
- Afternoon: Ramparts walk (if not too cold) or wine shop
- Evening: Quiet dinner, rest
🌱 Spring (vines + nature bursting)
In spring, Beaune's vines explode. It's time to get outside and walk. Heads up: vines are treated against disease in April-May. Look, don't touch the leaves.
Day 1
- Morning: Vineyard walk around town (look, don't touch!)
- Lunch: Caves Madelaine
- Afternoon: Hospices + Belfry
- Evening: Soul Kitchen (booked) or Le Biztrot
Day 2
- Morning: Ramparts (quiet, cool stroll)
- Lunch: Le Biztrot
- Afternoon: La P'tite Cave wine shop + Patriarches
- Evening: Le Bouillon dinner
☀️ Summer (Beaune Beach + kids)
In summer, Beaune has its natural pool: Beaune Beach. It's magical for kids. Adults enjoy the terraces.
Day 1
- Morning: Beaune Beach (natural pool, swimming)
- Lunch: Picnic or Caves Madelaine (terrace)
- Afternoon: Belfry + ramparts
- Evening: Wine shop aperitif + outdoor dinner
Day 2
- Morning: Beaune Beach (kids love it)
- Lunch: Le Bouillon (family-friendly)
- Afternoon: Hospices (air-conditioned) + Patriarches
- Evening: Fallot mustard (quick stop) + light dinner
